Hamad International Airport is not simply Qatar’s airport. It is the operational heart of a national aviation strategy, and one of the busiest transfer hubs on earth. In 2025 it served 54.3 million passengers, a 3% increase, handled 282,975 aircraft movements and processed 2.59 million tonnes of cargo while working with 57 airline partners. In August it passed five million passengers in a single month for the first time in its history.
An operation at that scale is a small city, and it employs like one. Ramp crews, cargo teams, terminal services, retail, facilities, security and technical maintenance all run around the clock. This guide covers the range of jobs at and around HIA, what they pay, your rights under Qatar’s reformed labour law, and how to make sure an offer is real before you leave home.

Why Hamad International Airport Keeps Hiring
Four things drive continuous recruitment.
Transfer traffic is the foundation. Qatar’s aviation model connects Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas through Doha, and 13.5 million transfer passengers moved through the airport in 2025 while point-to-point traffic grew 5.4%. Transfer operations are staffing-intensive because baggage and passengers must be re-sorted for onward flights within tight windows.
Capacity growth is the second. The integration of Concourses D and E added 17 new contact gates, increasing boarding bridge capacity and reducing remote stands and bus transfers — more gates means more crews.
Service standards are the third. The airport reported 85% on-time performance and 98% passenger satisfaction across 2025. Those numbers are staffing-dependent, and they are defended rather than accepted.
Cargo volume is the fourth. At 2.59 million tonnes annually, Doha operates a major freight hub requiring warehouse, build-up, documentation and ramp cargo teams continuously.
Industry Overview
Employment at HIA runs across several distinct organisations, and knowing which one you are applying to matters.
The airport operator manages terminal operations, infrastructure, facilities and airport-wide services.
Ground handling is delivered principally by Qatar Aviation Services, covering ramp, baggage, passenger services, cabin cleaning and aircraft support.
The national carrier and its cargo division employ operational, technical and commercial staff directly.
Cargo and freight companies operate warehousing, documentation and forwarding services.
Retail, food and beverage concessions across the terminal employ large numbers of customer-facing staff.
Facilities management contractors deliver cleaning, maintenance, HVAC, electrical and building services.
Security services operate under civil aviation security requirements with enhanced vetting.
Airside employment requires an airport identity pass following security clearance, arranged and paid for by the employer.

Airport packages typically include accommodation, transport, meals or a food allowance, medical cover, uniforms and an annual return air ticket. These are substantial and should be weighed alongside the cash salary.
Qatar’s minimum wage under Law No. 17 of 2020 is QAR 1,000 basic per month, plus QAR 500 accommodation allowance where housing is not provided and QAR 300 food allowance where meals are not provided. It applies to expatriate workers and remains the legal floor.
Your Rights Under Qatar’s Labour Law
Qatar’s labour framework has been reformed substantially, and Law No. 9 of 2026, signed on 25 June 2026, further strengthened enforcement with automated monitoring, digital dispute systems and penalties including service suspension for non-compliant employers.
Working hours are 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week, with reduced hours during Ramadan. Overtime carries additional compensation above standard rates.
End-of-service gratuity accrues based on basic wage and length of service, typically around three weeks of basic pay for each year worked. It is forfeited only in narrow circumstances such as dismissal for inciting an unlawful strike.
Job mobility is the most important reform. The No Objection Certificate requirement is abolished. Workers may change employers while observing notice periods — one month for up to two years of service, two months for longer tenure.
Exit permits have been removed for most private-sector workers, meaning employer permission is not required to leave the country.
Airport work runs on rotating shifts and irregular operations create pressure to extend hours. Know the standard limits, keep your own record of shifts worked, and understand that the enforcement mechanisms behind these rules have been getting stronger, not weaker.
The Wage Protection System
Employers covered by Qatar’s labour law must pay wages electronically through the Wage Protection System into a bank account in Qatar within the prescribed periods.
This is the practical mechanism that makes a contract enforceable. WPS creates a record of what was paid and when, and non-compliance triggers penalties and administrative action against the employer, including the service suspensions strengthened under Law No. 9.
Insist on WPS payment into your own Qatari bank account. Cash payment leaves nothing enforceable and is one of the clearest signals of a problem employer.
Wage complaints go to the Ministry of Labour, which operates dispute resolution committees, and Qatar has established a workers’ support and insurance fund to assist workers in certain unpaid-wage situations.
Insurance and Health Cover
Qatar operates a mandatory health insurance framework requiring employers to provide health insurance for expatriate workers through approved providers.
Confirm in writing what your policy covers, which facilities you can use, and whether dependants are included if you intend to bring family. Health cover quality varies considerably between employers and it is a legitimate question to ask at offer stage.
Airside work carries genuine occupational risk — apron vehicle movements, manual handling, noise exposure and working around live aircraft. Employers are responsible for work injury compensation under the labour law, and reputable aviation employers carry group personal accident cover for operational staff. Ask what applies to your role specifically.
Given that risk profile, a personal accident policy and, for anyone with dependants, a term life insurance policy purchased in India are sensible additions to whatever the employer provides.
Training, Certification and Security Clearance
Airport work runs on documented competence, which is why entry-level roles accept candidates without aviation experience — the employer trains you.
Station training covers aviation safety, security awareness, ramp operations, manual handling and equipment operation. Airside driving requires separate authorisation after specific training and assessment. Cargo staff handling regulated commodities need dangerous goods training with periodic renewal. Security roles require civil aviation security certification and enhanced background vetting.
Dangerous goods certification is the one most worth pursuing. It is mandated by regulation rather than employer preference, internationally recognised, and it makes you difficult to replace.
Security clearance and the airport identity pass are arranged and paid for by the employer. Anyone charging you for a security pass is defrauding you.
Before paying any private provider for aviation certification, confirm with actual employers that they recognise it. Unrecognised aviation certificates are a well-established fraud aimed at hopeful candidates.
Career Growth
An airport of this size promotes internally because trained, security-cleared staff are expensive to replace.
The specialist route runs from general handler to dangerous goods specialist, cargo documentation officer or GSE operator, each with a clear premium.
The technical route runs into ground support equipment maintenance, or into terminal building services — HVAC, electrical and mechanical — where trade qualifications pay well and demand is steady given the scale of the facility.
The supervisory route runs to team leader, duty officer and ground operations supervisor, requiring English and regulatory knowledge.
The transferable route is the strongest long-term argument. Aviation ground and cargo experience is recognised across the Gulf and translates directly into freight forwarding, customs brokerage, logistics and airport operations roles — including in India, where airport and air cargo capacity is expanding significantly.
Financial Planning and Remittance
An indicative plan for a ramp agent earning QAR 2,300 with accommodation, transport and meals provided:
| Item | Monthly (QAR) | Approx. INR |
|---|---|---|
| Personal expenses | 320 | ₹8,400 |
| Phone and internet | 80 | ₹2,100 |
| Remittance home | 1,450 | ₹37,900 |
| Savings in Qatar account | 330 | ₹8,600 |
| Insurance and buffer | 120 | ₹3,100 |
Because accommodation, transport and meals are usually covered, a large proportion of cash salary can go home. That produces something lasting only if it is directed deliberately rather than allowed to disperse.
Remit through banks or licensed exchange houses only.
Plan for the end of the posting from the start. End-of-service gratuity at roughly three weeks of basic pay per year is a real asset that should be understood and claimed properly. Alongside it, an NRE or NRO account, a systematic investment plan, property or clearing existing debt in India will convert Gulf years into something permanent.
Working and Living in Doha
Qatar is a single-city market, so almost all airport employment is in and around Doha. Employer-provided accommodation is standard for operational roles and typically shared, with transport to the airport provided.
Summer heat is severe, and outdoor apron work in those months is genuinely demanding. Qatar applies restrictions on outdoor work during the hottest part of the day in summer months, and employers are required to provide appropriate rest, shade and hydration. Ask how your employer manages this before accepting a ramp role.
How to Apply
Use legitimate channels only.
For Indian nationals, that means a Registered Recruiting Agent listed by the Ministry of External Affairs on the eMigrate system. Qatar is on the list of countries requiring Emigration Clearance for ECR passport holders, so clearance through eMigrate is mandatory and Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana insurance is compulsory.
The airport operator, the national carrier, Qatar Aviation Services, cargo companies, retail concessionaires and facilities management contractors all recruit through their own official career portals. Applying directly removes intermediaries entirely and is always safer.
Before accepting, obtain in writing: job title and duties, basic salary and allowances, accommodation standard and occupancy, food arrangements, transport, medical insurance including dependants, shift pattern, annual leave, air ticket entitlement, contract duration and the employment contract itself.
How to Avoid Job Fraud
A globally recognised airport name is exactly what fraudsters exploit.
No legitimate employer requires a worker to pay for a job. In properly structured recruitment, visa costs and travel to the country of employment are the employer’s responsibility. Payments demanded as visa fees, agency charges, uniform deposits, security clearance costs or job guarantees are the defining marker of fraud.
Verify the agent’s Registered Recruiting Agent status with the Ministry of External Affairs before paying anything to anyone.
Treat these as disqualifying: an offer letter before any interview; a recruiter using a personal Gmail or Yahoo address while claiming to represent the airport or the national carrier; WhatsApp-only communication with no verifiable office; salaries far above the ranges here; a demand for your original passport; a charge for an airport security pass; and any instruction to travel on a visit visa with a promise of conversion after arrival.
Be alert to fake recruitment websites that copy airport and airline branding. Apply only through the organisation’s official domain, and verify by contacting the employer through its published corporate channels rather than through the recruiter.
Insist on seeing the actual employment contract before departure and confirm the job title matches the real role. Contract substitution remains the most common abuse in this corridor.
Your passport is your property. Under Qatari law, employers may not retain workers’ passports against their will.
Report fraud immediately. Indian nationals can file at cybercrime.gov.in or call helpline 1930, and the Embassy of India in Doha assists Indian workers in distress. Within Qatar, labour complaints go to the Ministry of Labour.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is Hamad International Airport’s operation? In 2025 it served 54.3 million passengers, handled 282,975 aircraft movements and 2.59 million tonnes of cargo, and worked with 57 airline partners.
Do I need experience to work at the airport? No. Entry-level ramp, cargo, cleaning and retail roles hire candidates without airport experience and provide the required training after hiring.
Which airport job pays best without a degree? Dangerous goods specialists, GSE operators and maintenance technicians at technician level, with supervisors above them.
Can I change employers once I am in Qatar? Yes. The No Objection Certificate requirement has been abolished, subject to notice periods of one month up to two years of service and two months beyond.
Who arranges and pays for the security pass? The employer. Any charge to you for a security pass or clearance is fraud.
How hot does apron work get? Summer conditions are severe. Qatar restricts outdoor work during the hottest hours in summer months and employers must provide rest, shade and hydration. Ask how this is managed before accepting.
Conclusion
Hamad International Airport is one of the world’s major aviation hubs and one of the largest single employers of expatriate workers in Qatar. Its 2025 numbers — 54.3 million passengers, 2.59 million tonnes of cargo, 57 airline partners, a record five-million-passenger month — describe an operation that hires continuously across ramp, cargo, terminal, technical and service functions.
For a worker from India, the combination that makes it worthwhile is specific: Qatar’s reformed labour law with abolished NOC and removed exit permits, salary through the Wage Protection System, mandatory employer health insurance, an end-of-service gratuity that accrues from day one, and recruitment through a Registered Recruiting Agent with emigration clearance and Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana cover. Get those right, hold your own passport, and take the dangerous goods or equipment certifications seriously — that is what turns an airport job into a career.
